NONE OTHER THAN US AMBASSADOR HARRY THOMAS JR. HANDED OVER THE CHECK AMOUNTING TO $132,000 TO JUSTICE SECRETARY LEILA DE LIMA IN THE FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUEST MADE BY THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT IN 2009 UNDER THE MUTUAL LEGAL ASSISTANCE TREATY (MLAT) BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.
THE CHECK AMOUNTING TO $132,000 IS A PROCEED FROM THE SALE OF REAL ESTATES OWED BY FORMER MILITARY COMPTROLLER JACINTO LIGOT AND HIS WIFE ERLINDA IN BUENA PARK, CALIFORNIA.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME A FOREIGN GOVERNMENT RETURNED TO THE PHILIPPINES PROCEEDS OF ILL-GOTTEN WEALTH ABROAD THROUGH MLAT.
I HOPE THAT THIS WILL BE THE START THAT THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT WILL BE SERIOUS ENOUGH IN CHASING AND PUTTING BEHIND BARS GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS WHO ACCUMULATED HUGE SOME OF MONEY THAT BELONGS TO THE FILIPINO PEOPLE.
COOPERATION BETWEEN COUNTRIES LIKE US AND PHILIPPINES SHOULD BE STRENGTHEN IN PROSECUTING AND RUNNING AFTER GOVERNMENT PERSONALITY WHO STOLE THE PEOPLES MONEY.
I HAVE THE SAME SENTIMENT OF THAT US AMBASSADOR THOMAS THAT THE MONEY SHOULD BE USED FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE FILIPINO PEOPLE.
THIS MUTUAL LEGAL ASSISTANCE TREATY BETWEEN US AND THE PHILIPPINES MUST BE DUPLICATED BY OTHER NATIONS. MAKING POSSIBLE TO RETURN WHATEVER GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS STOLEN FROM THE PEOPLE.
