As a consumer, we should be concerned and vigilant about the food we eat in order for us to stay fit and healthy. It is no secret that most products that is available in the market today from fruits, vegetables to lives stocks contains chemicals, pesticides, and genetically growth hormone.
Milk is part of our healthy diet. So it is important to take a closer look and examine where it came from whether it is beneficial to ones health or not because lately, milk is the subject of controversy that it was contaminated by melamine that cause a lot of side effects to human body. But little has been said about rBGH and IGF-1.
Natural Hormone
Hormone are chemicals that are produced naturally in the bodies of all animals including humans. Hormones may be produced in small amounts but they control important body functions such as growth development and reproduction.
Genetically-Engineered Hormone
Genetically-engineered bovine growth hormone also known as rBGH, has been use by most American Dairy Farmers. It is injected to cows to increase milk production. But the presence of rBGH in cows blood stimulates production of another hormone, called Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1, or IGF-1. This hormone is the one directly responsible for increasing milk production.
IGF-1 is a naturally-occurring hormone found in the milk of both cows and humans. It affects cell growth and is responsible for the quick growth of infants of both species. However when cows milk was consumed by human non-infants, it behaves as a cancer accelerator. IGF-1 is not destroyed in the pasteurization process nor during human digestion and is therefore biologically active in humans, associated with breast, prostate, and colon cancers.
