"One day while checking my email, I came across to a very touching story of Shay, a mentally and physically dis-able child. I like to retold his inspiring story.
At a fund raising dinner for a school that serves children with learning disabilities, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never been forgotten by all who attended the said activity.
Shay and his father walked in the park were some boys were playing baseball. Shay asked his father if he thinks the boys will allow him to play? The father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay o play on their team. But as a father he also knew that if Shay were allowed to play it would give him a much needed sense of belonging and sense of confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.
So, the father approached one of the boys in the field and asked if Shay could play. To make the story short, Shay was accepted to play in the team. Over the teams bench, Shy posed a broad smile wearing the teams shirt to the delight of his father. The boys saw the joy and tears of Shay's father for accepting him to be part of their team.
In the bottom of the eight inning Shay's team scored a few runs but still behind by three. In the top of ninth inning, shay was given a chance to play in the right field position. Though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field with glove in his hand.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on the base and Shay was scheduled to be the next at the bat.
At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay, was given the bat. Everyone know that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly much less to connect with the ball.
As Shay, stepped up to the plate, the pitcher recognized that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life. Moved in closer, lob the ball softly, so Shay could at least make a contact.
The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again takes a few steps towards him toss the ball towards Shy. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.
The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could easily throw the ball to the first base man Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.
Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first man head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stand and both teams started yelling, Shay run to the first!, run to the first!
Never in his life, Shay run that far but he made it to the first base. Then everyone yelled run to the second! run to the second! Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards the second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the second base.
Now the right fielder have the ball, he is the smallest guy in the team, and have his chance to be the hero of their team. He could throw the ball easily to the second baseman for the tag but he understood the pitcher's intention, so he too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third baseman's head.
Shay ran towards the third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases towards home. The spectators was on their feet, screaming, Shay run home! run home! Shay run home, stepped on the plate and was cheered as the hero who hit the grandslam and won the game for his team.
In closing, the father said with tears rolling down in his face, the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world.
Shay didn't make it to another summer he died that winter.
The moral of the story is that we can make a big difference in others lives. I believe Shay story is very timely especially Christmas is around the corner. There are a lot of Shay out there waiting for our love, care and attention. Please don"t ignore them. Hug and embrace them. Show them your affection.
